Default Best installation for STI Driver

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum...hope you're all doing well.

So I'm getting tired of speeding tickets and I'm seriously considering a RD.
Looking at the STI Driver since it's the only undetectable RD on the market so far.

I'm actually in Ontario, Canada and, RD being illegal, I need to figure out a way of installing the STI Driver in a way to attract as less attention as possible. Best location so far seems to be on the dash, on the driver's side. I was also considering just under the rear mirror, but it seems too visible and I'd like to be able to use my visors on sunny days. Also, I need to be able to grab & hide the RD in case of trouble.

So the big question: how will a lower location on the dash affect the range? Any other locations to suggest?

Thanks

Why buy an STi when you can get a Redline for $30 more??? Still undetectable, and MUCH more range than the STi Driver.

As long as the detector has a clear view of the road (eg not obstructed by your wipers or by tint near the top of the windshield) then you will get great performance out of the STi Driver. Radar reception is marginally better the higher on the windshield that it is mounted however, because your headlights and/or license plats are primary laser targets, laser reception is substantially better the lower you mount the detector.

As was correctly pointed out by nella, the STi Driver is not the only undetectable radar detector. The Escort RedLine (Escort Inc is Beltronics' parent company) is also undetectable to all RDDs and offers better long range detection than the STi Driver. The custom installed Passport 9500ci is also undetectable and offers the same radar performance as the RedLine. The 9500ci includes GPS location based features such as TrueLock to eliminate radar false alerts and Defender, our updatable database of red light and speed cameras. The 9500ci also includes laser shifters.

thanks for the quick reply guys!

following your suggestions, I'm now looking at the Redline; didn't know it was stealth too
The 9500ci is perfect but will end up costing 4-5 times the price of a Redline or STI...big ouch!

For the installation, I know there's a pouch that attaches to the sun visor...only problem, it pointless when you have to bring the visor down to hide the sunlight, right?? lol does anyone use that method?

Anyways, bottom installation on dash is no good either...just realized that there too much heat coming from there in winter; I don't want to overheat the RD either.

So it seems that I'm stuck at a "in between" installation or high mounted one.

Any other suggestion anyone? keep them coming!

Send in an old detector and get $80 back, too. Maybe a blendmount would work??

I don't know what kind of vehicle you drive but I run my rd's on the dash with no noticible difference in range. I do drive a pickup though. I like the dash because you can quickly "rearrange" your rd in case of a pull over.

I realize that this thread is over two years old, but I thought that I would add my stealth installation solution as I also live in a Canadian provice where RDs are illegal. I have a Bel STi Magnum which I bought as it is invisible to the police Spectre RDDs and it also has great performance. I wanted an RD that I could move between vehicles, so a pricey remote custom installed RD did not work for me. I purchased a custom fit visor holder to covertly house the Magnum. I also bought an Escort Live direct wire kit to avoid dangling wires and enable the use of my iPhone as the display for the RD, out of sight of police and tail gaters.
So far this installation has worked very well and I have been pleasantly surprised to have received several "Cop spotted" alerts, indicating that there are other Escort Live users in the area. I can still use my sun visor as I have the RD and visor holder installed on the passenger's side of the car. I carry an extra pair of sunglasses in the car to offer to my passenger on sunny days.
