Mountaineers' Struggles in Sun Belt Opener Against Marshall

The App State Women's Basketball team faced a challenging road game against Marshall, resulting in a 75-62 loss in their Sun Belt opener. Despite a competitive effort, the Mountaineers couldn't secure the win, falling short in a closely fought match.

Head coach Alaura Sharp praised the team's performance, highlighting their progress and potential. She stated, 'Our team had some exceptional moments, and I believe we have a bright future ahead. It's crucial to maintain a positive mindset as we continue to grow and improve.'

Senior Emma Smith led the Mountaineers with a season-high 19 points, her fifth double-digit scoring game in 10 outings. Smith, along with Daisia Mitchell and Jayden McBride, contributed 42 points and six three-pointers, showcasing their offensive prowess. Smith and Mitchell also displayed their playmaking skills, combining for nine assists.

Freshman Addie Biel was the team's top rebounder, grabbing eight boards. The Mountaineers' shooting accuracy was impressive, with 81% from the free-throw line and 41% from beyond the arc. They also controlled the rebound, limiting Marshall to just five offensive rebounds and seven points off the bench.

The game began with a back-and-forth battle, tied at 11 points each after the first quarter. Smith's mid-range jumper gave the Mountaineers an early lead, but Marshall quickly responded. Elena Pericic's free-throw trio put App State ahead, only to be matched by Mitchell's back-to-back three-pointers. The Herd took a 27-24 lead at halftime.

The Mountaineers' struggles continued in the third quarter, with Marshall taking control. Despite a 5-0 run to start the period, Marshall's free-throw accuracy kept them ahead. The score was tied six times, but Marshall's late run secured a 49-43 lead. Marshall maintained their advantage in the fourth quarter, despite the Mountaineers' efforts.

Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will face Georgia Southern on December 20, aiming to bounce back from this setback. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
