In a striking revelation from the Brisbane International, world number one Aryna Sabalenka has voiced her concerns regarding the tennis calendar, suggesting that governing bodies in the sport prioritize their own interests over player welfare. She stated that authorities are not genuinely focused on safeguarding the health and well-being of athletes, which has become a pressing issue as players increasingly express dissatisfaction with the demanding nature of the schedule.
Many players have recently raised alarms about the length and intensity of the tennis season, which they feel is excessively grueling. For instance, leading female players are required to compete in a minimum of 20 mandatory tournaments each year, including four Grand Slam events, ten WTA 1000 tournaments, and six WTA 500 events.
Sabalenka, hailing from Belarus, indicated her intention to skip certain events this year to better care for her body. "The current season is simply insane," she remarked following her victory against Sorana Cirstea, where she won with a score of 6-3, 6-3. "We're witnessing a lot of injuries among players, which is alarming. The heavy balls we play with also add to the physical strain."
Last season, both Sabalenka and world number two Iga Swiatek faced deductions in ranking points for failing to participate in enough WTA 500 events. Reflecting on her past struggles, Sabalenka, now 27, noted, "I'm choosing to skip a few events this year to protect my body; I faced significant challenges last season. Despite achieving consistent results, there were times I played while feeling unwell or was completely exhausted from playing too much."
Looking ahead, she expressed a desire to manage her schedule more effectively, even though she anticipates penalties for doing so. The WTA Tour has reassured players that their welfare will always be a top priority, but many are left questioning whether this commitment translates into tangible support.
As Sabalenka gears up for the Australian Open, where she aims to secure her third title in four years, she candidly admitted, "I’m definitely not at my peak right now." Reflecting on the competition, she added, "Naturally, I would love to win every match convincingly, but real improvement comes only when you face strong opponents."
Last year, Sabalenka fell short in the Melbourne final against Madison Keys, showcasing the fierce competition present in the circuit. In another notable performance, Elena Rybakina continued her impressive streak by winning nine out of the last eleven games, defeating Spain's Paula Badosa with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Rybakina, who claimed the Wimbledon title in 2022, is expected to pose a significant challenge in Melbourne, having previously bested Sabalenka at the WTA Finals.
In her quest for a semi-finals spot in Brisbane, Rybakina will next face Czech player Karolina Muchova. Meanwhile, China’s Zheng Qinwen, the runner-up at the 2024 Australian Open, has opted out of this year’s opening Grand Slam event as she continues her recovery from elbow surgery. She shared on Instagram, "Competing in a Grand Slam demands an extreme level of fitness, and I haven’t yet reached the condition I aspire to."
On the men’s side of the Brisbane tournament, Britain’s Cameron Norrie suffered a defeat, losing to American Aleksandar Kovacevic with scores of 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 in the second round. In Auckland, the former British number one Katie Boulter also faced disappointment, falling to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina with a score of 7-5, 6-4 in a tightly contested second-round match.
