India's entertainment industry is making waves with a groundbreaking collaboration. PTC Punjabi, a renowned Indian platform, has joined forces with Temple, an Australian production company, to co-present three Punjabi-language feature films. This partnership is a significant step forward, leveraging the Australia-India Audiovisual Co-Production Treaty to create one of the largest regional-language collaborations. The films will be distributed across India, Australia, and New Zealand over the next 18 months, marking a strategic move for Punjabi cinema's global expansion.
The alliance is a strategic move, positioning Australia as a launchpad for Punjabi films to reach international audiences. Under the treaty, the productions will benefit from Australian federal and state film incentives, including grants and rebates, while utilizing local resources. Temple will manage Australian co-production requirements, ensuring treaty compliance and studio partnerships, while PTC Punjabi focuses on Indian creative development, production, and distribution. This collaboration involves three independent producers from PTC Punjabi's roster, each contributing to creative oversight and development alongside Temple.
The partnership is a response to the growing success of Indian-language films, including Punjabi titles, at the Australian box office. This shift has sparked interest among Indian producers, who view Australia as both a production hub and a gateway for international distribution. Rajiee M. Shinde, CEO of PTC Entertainment Channels, emphasizes the potential of Punjabi cinema, stating, 'Punjabi cinema is ready for its global leap, and Australia gives us the perfect runway.' Anupam Sharma, founder of Temple, adds, 'The Australia–India Co-Production Treaty is a game-changer, and Australia will be the engine that takes Punjabi cinema global.'
This collaboration represents a substantial investment in Australia's screen sector, particularly in Victoria and New South Wales, from India. PTC Network, a leading global Punjabi-language entertainment platform, operates PTC Punjabi. The pact was announced at the WAVES Film Bazaar, the market component of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, highlighting the significance of this partnership in the global film industry.
