Can a player without a club still make it to the World Cup? That's the question surrounding Takehiro Tomiyasu, the free agent defender, as Japan's coach, Hajime Moriyasu, expresses his hopes for the player's inclusion in the upcoming tournament. This is a bold move, considering Tomiyasu's recent history.
Tomiyasu, who left Arsenal in July, hasn't had a club since and has been battling injuries for the past couple of years. He and the Gunners mutually agreed to part ways, allowing him to focus on recovery. But with the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico just over six months away, the pressure is on.
Moriyasu, however, remains optimistic. He stated on Monday that Tomiyasu could still be part of the Japanese squad. "To answer simply, I think he can make it," Moriyasu said before a friendly match against Bolivia. "If he is in good shape, he will be a candidate to help Japan challenge to win the World Cup in North America."
Tomiyasu's journey with Arsenal began in August 2021, where he played in 84 matches across all competitions. Unfortunately, injuries limited his appearances during the 2024-25 season.
He has 42 caps for Japan and played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, he hasn't played for his country since June of last year.
Moriyasu added, "We are in constant contact to check on his recovery. I don't know what level he will be able to reach but if I am able to see that he is playing and performing well, I want him to be a part of the squad." But here's where it gets controversial... Can a player truly be match-fit without consistent club play?
And this is the part most people miss... The coach's decision hinges on Tomiyasu's fitness and performance.
