A community's heart is opening wide, with nearly $120,000 pouring in to support the Sluman family as they navigate a challenging leukemia treatment journey.
It's been almost a month since Chris Sluman received a daunting leukemia diagnosis, and the incredible spirit of the North Bay community is shining brighter than ever. Fundraisers and donations continue to flood in, offering a powerful beacon of hope for Chris and his family.
The financial lifeline for the Sluman family has grown substantially, with a GoFundMe campaign dedicated to Chris's treatment now standing at an impressive $115,699 as of Friday, February 6th. This vital fundraising effort was initiated around January 9th by the compassionate staff at Parkside Animal Hospital, where Chris's wife, Hailey Bertrand-Sluman, dedicates her skills as a veterinarian. The funds are crucial for covering treatment expenses that, as the family notes, are not fully encompassed by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan).
This remarkable financial surge coincides with Chris undergoing intensive chemotherapy in Sudbury, with further treatment on the horizon. Hailey recently shared a heartfelt update, reflecting on both the immense medical hurdles and the overwhelming wave of community love and support. "Though it won’t stop me from trying, the continued outpouring of love and help even a month after diagnosis is absolutely astounding," she expressed. "You all have helped us feel so very cared for."
She also revealed a profound new understanding of cancer treatment. "I had no idea what aggressive chemo looked like a month ago," Hailey explained. "I have learned a lot." The physical toll on Chris is significant, with his immune system remaining severely suppressed. "Chris is still about the same. His WBC (white blood cell count) is still very low (which have been assured is normal and better than if it came back too fast)," she shared.
But here's where it gets tough to imagine: Chris is sleeping most of the day as his body battles to recover from treatment. "When he is awake, it takes all he has to stand long enough to shower or stay awake long enough to eat," she described, noting thankfully that he hasn't recently experienced nausea or pain.
The family is currently back home in North Bay for a brief respite as they await the next phase of Chris's treatment. Hailey mentioned they are home for one week, and Chris is expected to begin the next stage of his drug therapy soon. He remains highly immunocompromised, meaning visitors are not yet possible.
And this is the part most people miss: The family is also actively seeking assistance from drug companies, as the costs associated with treatment remain a significant concern. "We were very excited to hear that ponatinib will be discounted 30 per cent (so $253 a day instead of $330)," Hailey noted in her update.
Amidst these challenges, moments with their daughter, Briar, serve as a powerful source of strength. "We live for Briar’s visits and the artwork, snuggles, and entertainment," Hailey added.
To further rally support, two community fundraisers are scheduled for this month. On February 20th, Churchill’s Prime Rib House will host a "Night of Community and Support" dinner and silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting the Sluman family. Organized by Steve and Mark Deacon of Deacon Wealth Management, tickets are $250 per plate. Deacon Wealth Management is generously covering the meal costs, ensuring the entire ticket fee goes directly to the family. You can e-transfer to Mark at [email protected] or pay at the door. Space is limited to 100 seats, so please confirm your attendance by emailing [email protected] or texting (416) 805-7482.
Then, on February 21st, Gateway City Brewery will host "Stand With Sluman," featuring live music, trivia, and a silent auction. Entry for this event is $20, with all proceeds directly supporting the Sluman family.
The GoFundMe page remains open for donations to help alleviate treatment costs, travel expenses, and lost income as Chris's fight continues. Your generosity can make a profound difference.
