Darren Till vs. Ian Garry: The Backstage Drama Explained (2025)

Is Ian Machado Garry the real deal inside the octagon, or is he putting on an act? Darren Till, never one to mince words, has some very strong opinions on the matter, and he's not holding back. Veteran MMA journalist Damon Martin reports that Till is calling out Garry's authenticity after a backstage incident involving Khamzat Chimaev at UFC Qatar.

Till acknowledges Garry's undeniable fighting talent, especially after his dominant victory over Belal Muhammad. But here's where it gets controversial... Till questions Garry's personality and public persona, labeling him "fake beyond all beliefs." Ouch!

According to Till's fiery tweets, the breaking point seemed to be Garry's interaction with Chimaev, who was in Qatar cornering Arman Tsarukyan. Till suggests Garry was being disingenuous, particularly when he called Chimaev a child. "That whole interaction was fake," Till wrote, claiming Garry appeared scared when he turned away. He contrasts this with his own close friendship with Chimaev, built on a foundation of authenticity: "Khamzat is like me... If you chat shit when we see you what is." Till believes Garry's behavior is simply unlikeable, regardless of his fighting prowess.

But the criticism doesn't stop there. And this is the part most people miss... Till also takes aim at Garry's comments regarding Leon Edwards' recent loss. Garry had previously trained at the same gym as Edwards, but was ultimately asked to leave. Edwards himself told MMA Fighting that Garry “just didn’t fit into the gym.” The reason? Apparently, a culture clash between teammates.

Till sees Garry's criticism of Edwards as further evidence of his questionable character. "Garry got kicked out of that gym as he did of others [cause] he's a w*nker at the end of the day," Till stated, pulling no punches. Garry now trains full time in Brazil at Chute Boxe, alongside former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.

Of course, it's worth noting that Till and Chimaev are close friends and training partners, a bond forged over several years. This undoubtedly influences Till's perspective and his defense of Chimaev after the backstage scuffle with Garry.

The big question is: Is Till's assessment fair? Is Garry genuinely inauthentic, or is he simply a confident and perhaps brash young fighter ruffling feathers? Could there be more to the story than what's being presented? What do you think? Is Till's loyalty to Chimaev clouding his judgment, or is he spot-on in his assessment of Garry's character?
