Dowling Catholic Dominates Iowa City Liberty to Claim 5A Football Crown!
It was a triumphant return to glory for Dowling Catholic as they crushed Iowa City Liberty with a final score of 27-10 to seize the Class 5A state championship. This victory not only marks their first title since 2019 but also solidifies their legacy in Iowa high school football.
The Maroons, fueled by an unstoppable offense and a relentless defense, controlled the game from start to finish. Running back Ian Middleton was the star of the show, racking up an impressive 206 rushing yards and two touchdowns. But here's where it gets interesting: the Maroons' defense, led by defensive end Ryan Bobo, was a force to be reckoned with, delivering 11 tackles for loss, including 4 from Bobo himself, constantly disrupting the Lightning's plays.
Middleton's impact was immediate. His early performance, with seven carries for 50 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown run, set the tone early in the first quarter, giving Dowling Catholic a 7-0 lead. The Maroons continued their dominance, with a 34-yard run from Middleton leading to a field goal, extending their lead to 10-0. Iowa City Liberty managed a field goal to narrow the gap, but the Maroons' momentum was too strong.
But here's a twist: Iowa City Liberty faced a quarterback change due to injury, which added another layer of challenge for them. Despite the setback, they showed resilience, but Dowling Catholic's offense, spearheaded by Middleton's second touchdown, continued to dominate. A perfectly executed play-action pass from Joey Nahas to Jeffrey Roberts resulted in a 67-yard touchdown, further solidifying the Maroons' lead at 24-3.
Iowa City Liberty managed to score a touchdown in the third quarter, but Dowling Catholic responded with a field goal in the fourth, sealing the victory at 27-10. The Lightning's final attempt was thwarted by an interception, ending their historic season.
Despite the loss, Iowa City Liberty's season was remarkable. They reached the title game for the first time in program history, finishing with an impressive 11-2 record. Their coach, Scott Chandler, expressed immense pride in his team's performance.
Dowling Catholic's victory was a sweet culmination of a season where they avenged their only loss, finishing with a record of 12-1. This win brings their total state titles to 11, second only to Harlan's 14 in Iowa history. Head coach Tom Wilson praised his players for their dedication and effort.
