A massive internet outage has caused chaos, impacting a wide range of online services and leaving users frustrated. This time, it's not just your regular website glitches; it's a global issue that has affected some of the biggest names in the tech industry.
The Internet's Dark Moment: A Worldwide Blackout
On Tuesday, just before 11:50 am GMT, a significant internet infrastructure outage occurred, taking down numerous websites and services, including major Australian airports, the ride-sharing giant Uber, and the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT.
Cloudflare, a $70 billion company that provides content delivery and security services, announced that its global network was experiencing issues. With a claim that 20% of the web runs through its network, serving millions of customers, including 35% of the Fortune 500, this outage had far-reaching consequences.
"Cloudflare is aware of an issue impacting multiple customers. We're investigating widespread 500 errors, and our dashboard and API are also affected," the company stated.
But here's where it gets controversial: Cloudflare, a company that prides itself on its robust network, is now at the center of this massive internet outage. With such a significant portion of the web relying on its services, the impact is immense.
As of 11:20 pm, Cloudflare reported that services were recovering, but customers could still expect higher-than-normal error rates. And indeed, errors persisted well into the early hours of the morning, affecting multiple sites.
APIs, the backbone of modern web connectivity, were impacted, causing disruptions between different platforms and services. 500 errors, a generic term for server-side issues, were rampant, and companies relying on Cloudflare's dashboard to manage their services were left in the dark.
The affected sites included major Australian airports like X, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, as well as Downdetector, a site that uses Cloudflare's services to verify users. When Downdetector came back online, it revealed a surge in outage complaints from users of various other popular services, including Amazon Web Services, OpenAI (the makers of ChatGPT), Letterboxd, Grindr, League of Legends, and Canva.
Interestingly, some of the tech giants like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Google services seemed to have weathered the storm, remaining operational throughout the outage.
