Greece's Salary Dilemma: Inflation Outpaces Wage Growth (2026)

The Greek economy is facing a challenging situation where salary hikes are failing to keep up with the rising cost of living, leaving many citizens at risk of experiencing a net income increase that lags behind inflation. This issue is particularly concerning as it highlights a potential disparity in disposable income compared to other European countries.

One might wonder, does Greece suffer from higher inflation than its neighboring countries? Interestingly, Eurostat statistics reveal a different story. The cumulative increase in consumer prices from 2021 to 2025 is estimated at 21.4% for Greece, which is relatively close to Portugal's 20.5% and Spain's 21.9%. However, the eurozone as a whole experienced a slightly higher increase of 22.6%.

The disparity in disposable income is a critical aspect to consider. In 2025, Greece's median equivalent disposable income was estimated at 60.8% of the EU average, while Spain and Portugal reached 98.6% and 76.5%, respectively. This discrepancy is despite the fact that Greece's median disposable income increased cumulatively by 33.8% during the 2021-2025 period, a slower improvement compared to Spain's 34.2% and Portugal's 35%. As a result, Greece's income gap has widened further.

The situation is expected to worsen in 2026, with average inflation projected to reach 4%. The National Economy and Finance Ministry's initial predictions for 2026 and 2027 were 3.2% and 2.4%, respectively. However, with the revision already set in motion, the forecast for 2027 is likely to be adjusted upwards, possibly exceeding 2.5%. This slowdown in inflation, especially in energy prices, will have implications for income maintenance.

To prevent a decline in real income, larger salary increases will be necessary. The government's Thessaloniki package aims to support the most vulnerable citizens, taking this reality into account. This situation highlights the complex relationship between inflation, disposable income, and the well-being of the population, especially in the context of economic policies and social welfare.

In my opinion, this issue underscores the importance of comprehensive economic strategies that consider both inflationary pressures and the distribution of disposable income. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of current policies in addressing the needs of the population, particularly in times of economic uncertainty. The Greek government's response to this challenge will be crucial in shaping the future economic landscape and the well-being of its citizens.
