As the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar has offered an insightful glimpse into the strategic thinking behind the Gujarat Titans' (GT) playing combination. In a recent interview on JioHotstar, Bangar emphasized the team's commitment to its initial player selections, highlighting key players like Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia. He also shed light on the unique role assigned to all-rounder Washington Sundar, who is expected to contribute primarily with the bat, potentially at the crucial number four position.
"One thing that immediately stands out is GT's faith in their initial picks. They've stuck with Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia, and that consistency is crucial for building a strong team dynamic. Washington Sundar's role is particularly intriguing; he's being positioned as a batting powerhouse, which is a strategic shift from his traditional all-round duties," Bangar explained.
Furthermore, Bangar suggested that Tewatia or Shahrukh could be utilized as impact players in the lower order, adding an element of surprise to the team's batting lineup. He also proposed the inclusion of Glenn Phillips to bolster the middle order alongside the formidable Jos Buttler at the top.
"What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for dynamic partnerships. If Tewatia and Shahrukh can deliver in the lower order, it will significantly enhance GT's batting depth. And with Glenn Phillips joining Jos Buttler, the middle order becomes a force to be reckoned with. It's a well-thought-out strategy to ensure a balanced and versatile batting lineup," Bangar added.
In terms of bowling, Bangar highlighted the presence of Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada as the main overseas bowlers, forming a formidable duo that will be a key strength for the GT squad. With the first phase of the IPL 2026 schedule announced, the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans are gearing up for their campaign opener against the Punjab Kings on March 31 in Mullanpur. They will then play their first home game against the Rajasthan Royals on April 4 in Ahmedabad, followed by a match against the Delhi Capitals in Delhi on April 8. The GT franchise will also face off against the Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on April 12.
"Personally, I think the GT management has done a commendable job in assembling a well-rounded squad. The balance between overseas and domestic players, and the strategic positioning of key individuals, showcases a thoughtful approach to team building. I'm excited to see how this team performs and whether their strategic vision translates into success on the field," Bangar concluded.
As we await the commencement of IPL 2026, the Gujarat Titans' strategic approach to their playing combination certainly sets the stage for an intriguing season ahead.
