This unprecedented composition, coupled with substantial CO levels (CO/H2O = 1.65+-0.09) and red spectral slopes, provides compelling evidence for galactic cosmic ray (GCR) processing in the comet's outer layers.

Laboratory experiments support this theory, demonstrating that GCR irradiation efficiently converts CO to CO2 while forming organic-rich crusts. This suggests that the outer layers of 3I/ATLAS are composed of irradiated material, aligning with the observed coma composition and spectral reddening. Interestingly, the comet's erosion rate indicates that current outgassing only samples the GCR-processed zone, approximately 15-20 meters deep, never reaching the pristine interior material. While outgassing of pristine material after perihelion remains a possibility, it is considered unlikely.

This paradigm shift highlights that long-residence interstellar objects primarily reveal GCR-processed material, offering insights into their primordial formation environments. With 3I/ATLAS approaching perihelion in October 2025, urgent follow-up observations are crucial to confirm this interpretation and establish GCR processing as a fundamental evolutionary pathway for interstellar objects.
