Get ready for a thrilling comeback! Jill Schoelen, the multitalented actor, writer, and producer, is back and ready to conquer the horror genre once again. After a successful career in the '80s and early '90s, she took a break to embrace the ultimate role of motherhood. Now, with a renewed passion and creativity, Schoelen is set to make a splash with multiple exciting projects on the horizon.
Schoelen's journey in horror began cautiously, leaning more towards the horrific than the traditional horror genre. However, her breakthrough came with Wes Craven's 1985 TV movie, Chiller, and later, with her iconic role in The Stepfather. She reflects, "The Stepfather wasn't initially meant for the horror genre, but it found its way there thanks to some amazing critical reviews."
But here's where it gets controversial... Schoelen's most cherished roles are in The Stepfather and When a Stranger Calls Back. She reveals, "When a Stranger Calls Back was unique because it tapped into my personal fears. I had to work hard to earn those parts, and that's what makes them so special to me."
And this is the part most people miss... Schoelen's fighting spirit is not just limited to her roles; she recalls how she physically fought to retrieve her stolen purse, proving she's not your typical damsel in distress. Yet, she almost missed out on the chance to star in When a Stranger Calls Back, as director Fred Walton initially dismissed her.
"I was told I wasn't wanted for the role, but then I read for it, and I won it!" Schoelen's portrayal of Julia Jenz in the sequel elevated the film, showcasing her talent and winning over skeptics.
As her career flourished, Schoelen met her husband, a successful film composer, and her focus shifted to supporting his career and starting a family. She retired from Hollywood when she became pregnant with her son, Dante, but her creativity thrived in other forms, especially writing and music.
Fast forward to the present, and Schoelen is officially out of retirement, fueled by a personal loss and a battle with long COVID. Her renewed zest for life and art has led to an impressive slate of projects, including the upcoming feature Ralph's Perfekt Christmas, a dark comedy with a horror twist. Schoelen plays the female lead, and her passion for acting is reignited.
But that's not all! Schoelen's involvement in the film inspired her to create a new holiday album, Christmas is Forever, set for release next week. She shares, "I recorded some Christmas songs with my ex-husband, and our kids, as a unique way to send holiday greetings. Little did I know, those songs would find their way into the film!"
And there's more! Schoelen teases another horror movie, A Dying Art, a Pacific Northwest university-set thriller with a twist. She raves, "Horror fans are going to love this one! It's got a great cast and was a blast to make."
Schoelen's return has been a thoughtful journey, with her newly launched website, JillSchoelen.com, offering limited merch for her dedicated fans. She emphasizes, "I know horror fans love the physical, so I had to offer something special."
As Schoelen gears up for her comeback, she expresses her desire to work with filmmaker Mike Flanagan and notes her eagerness to dive deeper into the horror genre. "I want to make my mark on the horror audience, especially those who may not know me from franchise films."
