A major traffic incident on the M5 has caused significant disruptions for drivers in the Bristol and Somerset areas. The evening rush hour (Tuesday, February 10) saw a crash near a busy junction, followed by emergency repairs elsewhere, leading to lengthy delays.
In Bristol, drivers faced long queues near the Almondsbury Interchange due to an accident on the northbound side. Meanwhile, in Somerset, two lanes of the southbound carriageway were reportedly closed between junctions 24 and 25 for emergency repairs.
Traffic cameras captured the extent of the congestion, with tailbacks stretching from Cribbs Causeway to the M4. The roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the crash at 4:46 pm, stating: "M5 northbound lane closed on exit slip road to one, queueing traffic due to accident at J15 M4 J20 (Almondsbury Interchange)."
The situation was further complicated by emergency repairs on the southbound carriageway, with Inrix reporting: "Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to emergency repairs on M5 southbound from J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South) to J25 A358 (Taunton)."
National Highways confirmed that the M5 reopened and traffic cleared around 7 pm. However, the incident highlights the potential for significant disruptions on major roads, especially during peak travel times.
