The retirement process began on January 9, 2026, as per Microsoft's support documentation. On this date, the app will be removed from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
For those who already have the app installed, there's a grace period. You can continue scanning new documents until March 9. After that, you'll still be able to access your previous scans, but only if you keep the app on your device and remain signed into your account.
But here's where it gets controversial: Microsoft hasn't clarified if this functionality will remain available indefinitely. If you lose your device after February 9, you might lose access to your scanned files, as you won't be able to download the app again. It's a risky situation, and users are advised to back up their important files elsewhere.
Microsoft recommends switching to OneDrive, which offers a built-in scanner function. You can download OneDrive from the respective app stores, and the scanning feature is easily accessible. For iPhone users, PCMag suggests trying Abbyy Finereader as an alternative.
The retirement of Microsoft Lens was initially announced in August 2025, with a planned retirement process starting in September. However, the process was delayed, and the official announcement came in January 2026. The reason for this delay is unknown, but it could have been to give users more time to adapt to new services.
