A South Surrey father's journey with younger-onset Alzheimer's disease is a powerful reminder of the impact this condition can have on individuals and their families.
Mark Breslaw's Story: Unraveling the Mystery of Memory Loss
In 2023, Mark Breslaw, a 47-year-old father and senior executive at a leading digital game developer, began to notice changes in his memory. Simple tasks became challenging, and he even got lost on his way home from work. Initially attributing these incidents to stress and a demanding lifestyle, Mark decided to seek medical advice when the issues persisted.
"I thought it was just the pressure of my job and family life," Mark recalls. "But when I got lost again, I knew something wasn't right."
Alzheimer's Awareness Month: A Time for Conversation and Support
January, designated as Alzheimer's Awareness Month, provides an opportunity for open dialogue about dementia. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is utilizing this time to share stories like Mark's, offering a glimpse into the lives of those affected by this disease.
Mark, along with his wife Shonna and youngest son Michael, resides in South Surrey. After a series of cognitive assessments and tests in early 2024, Mark's medical team suspected Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or dementia. Eager for answers, Mark reached out to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.'s First Link Dementia Helpline.
"Calling the helpline was a game-changer," Mark shares. "They welcomed me with open arms, offering support and information. It filled the void I felt during those uncertain months."
Diagnosis and a New Perspective
In early 2025, a cerebral spinal fluid test confirmed Mark's diagnosis of younger-onset Alzheimer's disease. While processing this news was challenging, Mark found a sense of freedom in having a clear understanding of his condition.
"Finally, I could have honest conversations with my loved ones," he explains. "It was a relief to put a name to what I was experiencing."
Mark's diagnosis led to a temporary step away from his role as Senior Director of Human Resources at Electronic Arts. However, attending a webinar featuring individuals living with younger-onset dementia opened his eyes to new possibilities.
"I realized I could still contribute and make a difference," Mark says. "I saw a path where I could educate, advocate, and continue doing what I loved."
Fighting Stigma and Raising Awareness
Inspired by his experience, Mark joined the Lived Experience Partner Program, determined to use his voice and story to combat stigma and raise awareness. As Mark and his family navigate their new reality, they find strength in a balanced approach, embracing both realism and positivity.
"Acceptance is an ongoing journey," Mark reflects. "But I'm grateful for the time I have with my family and friends now. I can be present for the little moments, like school events and sports practices with my son. I can connect with my adult children over meals, movies, and even blood donation drives."
Mark's positive attitude and determination to fight stigma are a source of inspiration for many. His story serves as a reminder that while Alzheimer's disease may present challenges, there is still much to live for and contribute to.
