Is A.J. Brown's frustration a sign of trouble in Philadelphia? Following the Eagles' recent victory, the spotlight has turned to star receiver A.J. Brown and his role in the offense. After a game against the Packers where he was targeted only three times, Brown's candid comments during a live stream with streamer JankyRondo, including the phrase "it's a s—show," have raised eyebrows. He even went as far as to suggest fantasy football managers drop him from their teams.
When asked about these comments, Head Coach Nick Sirianni downplayed any distraction, stating, "No, I don’t think so." He emphasized Brown's hard work and integral role in the game plan. Sirianni also mentioned that Brown is "a big part of the game plan and will be a big part of the game plan going forward."
This isn't the first time this season Brown has expressed himself publicly. Earlier in the season, he posted cryptic messages on social media, even taking accountability for one after the Eagles' Week 4 win over the Buccaneers.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sirianni's response to questions about Brown's comments became increasingly terse. He stated, "I’m close to being done answering these questions with this." He defended Brown's work ethic and importance to the team.
The core of the issue likely stems from Brown's relatively unproductive season. He had only 2 catches for 13 yards against the Packers and is averaging a career-low 51.0 yards per game, while teammate DeVonta Smith is having a career year.
Sirianni explained that the stats don't always tell the whole story, citing plays designed for Brown that didn't materialize. He used Smith's touchdown as an example, explaining that the play was originally intended for Brown. "A.J. Brown is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL so of course we’re trying to get him involved in the game every single time," Sirianni said.
Through eight games this season, Brown has 31 catches for 408 yards and 3 touchdowns. He currently ranks 50th in the NFL in receiving yards. While there have been glimpses of his dominant form, such as his 121-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Vikings and his 109-yard, one-touchdown game against the Rams, he's had fewer than 30 receiving yards in four of his eight games. Brown missed Week 8 due to a hamstring injury, but Sirianni believes Brown is still the same player physically.
And this is the part most people miss... Sirianni's comments suggest a disconnect between Brown's expectations and his on-field production. Is this a minor blip, or a sign of deeper issues within the Eagles' offense? Could a change in strategy be needed to maximize Brown's potential?
