Oboe Raises $16M for AI-Powered Course Generation: Revolutionizing Personalized Learning (2026)

Oboe, a learning startup founded by Anchor co-founders Nir Zicherman and Michael Mignano—former Spotify executives—announced today that it has secured $16 million in a Series A round led by a16z, with continued support from existing investors including Eniac, Haystack, Offline, and Factorial. The round also featured investments from notable individuals such as Adam D’Angelo, Garry Tan, Lenny Rachitsky, Mati Staniszewski, Mikey Shulman, Jared Hecht, and M.G. Siegler.

The company’s AI-powered course-creation platform officially launched in September and enables users to set a learning goal and have the AI generate a tailored course for them. This fundraising follows the app’s release by about three months and comes a year after a $4 million seed round. Zicherman explained that the new capital is aimed at accelerating growth and scaling operations to reach a broader audience.

“We aim to reach billions of people eager to learn about new topics, and the opportunity is enormous,” Zicherman told TechCrunch in a recent interview. “To achieve this vision, we need to move faster and reach a larger audience at scale.” He added that Oboe’s team—seasoned builders of consumer products—gives the startup an edge over competitors in the market.

Bryan Kim, a partner at a16z, noted the platform’s rapid content generation without leaving users waiting for a loading screen. “We’ve long believed in the potential of AI-enhanced learning to help people explore new topics. After trying Oboe, we were impressed by the product and decided to back a founder who is ambitious, adaptable across formats, and proficient in leveraging AI to build a large platform,” Kim said.

Oboe is also refining its core course-generation experience. Previously, the service produced various text and audio formats in distinct styles and capped generation by payment tier. In the updated version, the app begins by understanding the user’s goal and then fabricates chapters aligned with that objective, integrating features like quizzes seamlessly into the course flow. For certain topics, it will also generate flashcards to help with memorization. On the audio front, users no longer must choose between podcast or lecture formats—the platform now renders a podcast that adjusts its tone to suit the material and user signals.

Zicherman observed a strong demand for STEM topics and noted that Oboe is curating high-quality material, including programming content, to meet this interest. He emphasized that effective teachers tailor learning paths to individual students, a philosophy Oboe is incorporating into its course design.

The startup is also overhauling its pricing model to offer unlimited course generation. If users wish to delve deeper into a subject, they can subscribe for $15 per month ($144 per year) to access additional course chapters. There’s a $40 per month ($384 per year) Pro plan that grants unlimited chapter access and the ability to export or download courses for offline use, which is particularly appealing to students who prefer printouts or offline study.

At present, Oboe’s courses are available in English, with plans to expand language support and localization to reach more regions. The platform is accessible on the web, with mobile apps on the roadmap.

In recent years, other AI-assisted learning tools—such as Google NotebookLM and former NotebookLM developers’ Huxe—have introduced prompt-driven podcast or audio-based explorations. Oboe differentiates itself by offering deeper, chapter-based learning rather than one-off generations.

Would you like this rewritten version adjusted for a different audience (e.g., investors, students, educators) or tailored to a shorter format for a social post?
