New research reveals a stark disparity in retirement savings between genders, with women in Britain facing a £113,000 shortfall compared to men. Over a third of women are at risk of poverty in their later years, largely due to employment interruptions throughout their working lives. The Scottish Widows Women and Retirement Report highlights a 32% gap in private pension values, with women's median pension value at £173,000, significantly lower than men's £286,000. This disparity is driven by childcare responsibilities, with women being 12 times more likely to interrupt their careers for child-rearing. Extended periods away from work can reduce retirement funds by £70,000. The study illustrates this with a scenario: a woman taking a five-year break at 35 would accumulate a pension worth £512,000 by 67, £69,380 less than a continuously employed woman. Financial preparation for these breaks is inadequate, with two-fifths of women making no arrangements and 56% not considering the impact on retirement. Despite better money management during gaps (61% vs. 58%), women remain less likely to plan financially in advance. This planning failure compounds the significant pension shortfall, creating additional financial pressure for women. Susan Hope, Retirement Expert at Scottish Widows, emphasizes the issue, stating that millions of women are unaware of the gender pension gap. She suggests improving awareness and take-up of shared parental leave policies, which are critical yet underutilized by four in five women. This represents approximately 2.7 million working mothers, with some facing unsupportive workplace attitudes. Ms. Hope also recommends third-party contributions from partners during career interruptions to address contribution gaps and protect women's pensions.
