Get ready for a revolutionary journaling experience! Google's November 2025 Feature Drop brings an exciting update: the Journal app is now accessible to Pixel 8 and 9 series users. But the real question is, will this app transform your daily routine or become just another digital distraction?
The Journal app, unveiled with the latest generation, initially wasn't available for older devices after its Tuesday announcement. However, users of Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9a can now join the party! Simply download it from Google Play and embark on your journaling journey.
Customization and Privacy:
Once installed, the app offers a personalized setup. You can sign in with your Google Account to unlock cloud backup and AI-powered features, including tailored writing prompts. But here's where it gets controversial—how comfortable are you with Google having access to your deepest thoughts?
Select a journaling goal to guide your writing: Mindfulness, Daily Reflections, Creativity, Health & Fitness, Personal Growth, Productivity, or Life Story. Or, if you're not ready to commit, choose 'Not now' and decide later in the Settings.
You can connect Google Photos and Health Connect for more personalized writing inspiration. Backup your journal entries and activity, ensuring they're safe when upgrading to a new phone. Privacy-conscious users can opt for 'No lock' or sync the app's security with their screen lock settings.
Journaling Made Easy:
The app opens to a ready-to-go journaling screen, with font and color customization options. The 'Add item' menu lets you enhance your journal with photos, videos, health activity, and even location data.
The bottom bar offers two tabs: 'Entries' and 'Insights'. 'Entries' organizes your journal by recent entries, bookmarks, and more, with a prominent floating action button. 'Insights' provides a weekly or monthly view of your journaling habits, revealing stats like most active time, total entries, and longest word count.
AI-Assisted Journaling:
AI features, such as past topic suggestions, deep dive inspirations, reflections, and a mood tracker, are reserved for the latest Pixel 10 series devices. But is this exclusivity a fair trade-off for user privacy? Are these AI features worth the potential cost of sharing your personal thoughts?
