The Portland International Airport is gearing up for its next big project, aiming to address a long-standing issue for travelers. While the airport's new main terminal has already earned accolades, PDX is now focusing on enhancing the overall passenger experience. The Port of Portland, which operates the airport, has given a sneak peek into the upcoming renovations, revealing a host of exciting changes.
Shorter Walks to Baggage Claim: A Traveler's Dream
One of the most anticipated updates is the introduction of shorter exits to the baggage claim area. After the initial excitement of the new terminal, travelers have faced long walks to reach the baggage carousels. This issue will be addressed by new exits at the north and south ends of the airport, allowing passengers to descend directly to the baggage claim via escalators with circular wood-beamed openings in the floor. This holistic view of the terminal building ensures a quicker and more efficient journey for travelers.
New Retail Spaces: A Local Shopping Experience
The airport is also expanding its retail offerings with 14 new storefronts, both before and after security. These will include local brands like Columbia Sportswear, Topaz Farm, Kure Superfoods, Lola's Cafe, and a grab-and-go shop sponsored by the recently shuttered Skanner News. On the north end, Barbur Food, the Bar Pilot Bar, and a storefront bearing the name of the recently shuttered Sheridan Fruit Company will be added. The airport officials confirmed that the Skanner News storefront would retain its historic name, while discussions are ongoing for the Sheridan name.
Artistic Enhancements: A Celebration of the Pacific Northwest
In addition to the practical improvements, the airport is also embracing the arts. New art installations, either by Pacific Northwest artists or inspired by the region, will be displayed throughout the airport. One notable piece is a stunning 55-foot mosaic by Lakota artist Dyani White Hawk, already in place behind construction walls by the south security exit. Nine other pieces, including large works by local Indigenous artists, will follow, adding a touch of creativity and cultural significance to the airport's spaces.
Lounge Expansion: A Relaxing Haven for Travelers
As the renovations progress, travelers can also look forward to a new Alaska Airlines lounge, expected to open later this year. The team behind the project is thrilled to see the walls coming down, marking the completion of this phase and the realization of their vision. The airport has promised much more as the rollout continues this spring, ensuring an enhanced and more enjoyable experience for all travelers.
