The Trump administration is taking a hard look at a potential financial lifeline for terrorists. Is Minnesota inadvertently funding terror?
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has revealed an investigation into the possibility that Minnesota's tax dollars may have inadvertently supported the notorious terror group Al-Shabaab. This comes amid allegations of widespread fraud in the state's public assistance programs, with a particular focus on the Somali community.
Bessent's statement on X highlights the Trump administration's concern over the mismanagement of funds during the Biden era and Governor Tim Walz's tenure. The investigation was prompted by a report in the City Journal, which claimed that millions from Minnesota's welfare programs ended up in Al-Shabaab's hands. This has sparked calls for action from Minnesota Republicans, including Rep. Tom Emmer.
But here's where it gets controversial. President Trump has been vocal about his stance on Somali immigrants in Minnesota, even going as far as ending temporary deportation protections for Somalis in the state. He has accused Somalis of fraudulent activities, but Walz and other Minnesota Democrats have defended the community, urging caution against generalizations.
The question of whether state funds are reaching terror groups is not new. A 2019 report by the Office of the Legislative Auditor couldn't confirm the claims but didn't rule out the possibility. The complex nature of these fraud schemes and the involvement of various community members, as pointed out by former investigator Kayseh Magan, makes this a challenging issue to untangle.
And this is the part most people miss: While the investigation is ongoing, it's essential to remember that those charged in the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme may have had personal financial gain as their primary motive, as suggested by former U.S. attorney Andy Lugar. However, the potential connection to terror groups cannot be ignored, especially given the current political climate.
