A Race Against Time: Philippines Landfill Collapse Leaves Dozens Missing

In a desperate race against time, rescue workers are tirelessly searching for dozens of people still missing after a devastating landslide at a landfill site in the central Philippines. The tragedy, which occurred earlier this week, has left a trail of uncertainty and grief for the families of the missing.

Two days after the incident, Mayor Nestor Archival reported signs of life at the site in Cebu City, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy. However, the mayor also confirmed the deaths of four individuals and the hospitalization of twelve others, highlighting the dire circumstances faced by emergency services.

The privately-owned Binaliw landfill, a 15-hectare site, collapsed while 110 workers were on-site, according to officials. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, with Cebu City councillor Joel Garganera suggesting poor waste management practices as a potential factor.

Operators had been cutting into the mountain, mining the soil, and then piling garbage to form another mountain of waste, according to Garganera. This practice, he warned, could have contributed to the instability that led to the landslide.

The rescue operation is further complicated by the unstable debris and the need for advanced equipment. Conditions on the ground are challenging, with rescue workers having to carefully excavate and deploy a 50-ton crane to reach those still trapped beneath the rubble.

The families of the missing are anxiously awaiting news, with more than 30 people, all workers at the landfill, still unaccounted for. Cebu City councillor Dave Tumulak, chairman of the city's disaster council, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that rescue efforts are ongoing 24/7.

Jerahmey Espinoza, whose husband is missing, shared her family's hopes and fears: "We haven't seen him or located him since the disaster. We're still hopeful that he's alive."

As the search continues, the focus is on ensuring the safety of the rescue workers and providing the necessary support to those affected by this tragic event.
